Amsterdam Dance Event began in 1996 with just three nighttime venues. Thirty years later, its yellow-and-black identity connects an entire city through electronic music.

From Wednesday 21 to Sunday 25 October 2026, ADE returns to Amsterdam for its 30th anniversary. There are parties, performances, industry conversations and opportunities to discover something you did not know you liked.

For the Netherlands, that is something to be proud of: an event built here has become a meeting place for electronic music from around the world. And its story contains a few surprises.

## What is Amsterdam Dance Event?

Amsterdam Dance Event, usually shortened to ADE, combines an electronic music festival with a conference and a wider cultural programme.

Instead of gathering everyone on one festival field, ADE spreads across Amsterdam. Clubs, concert halls and cultural spaces host their own events, making the city itself part of the experience.

For 2026, ADE advertises more than 1,200 events across over 300 venues. You might spend an afternoon discovering music, attend a live performance in the evening and finish in a club the following morning.

## How did ADE begin in 1996?

ADE’s origins sit in the Dutch music industry’s efforts to support musicians and bring their work to a wider audience.

According to ADE’s own history, Maria Jiménez and Peter Schmidt helped persuade Conamus, the Dutch music promotion foundation later renamed Buma Cultuur, to support the first edition.

There was still some convincing to do. In his account of those early days, longtime ADE programmer Gary Smith recalls that Conamus head John de Mol Sr. questioned whether dance music really counted as music.

That detail makes the anniversary particularly satisfying. A sound that still needed defending became the foundation of an international cultural gathering.

The first edition’s nighttime programme occupied three venues. As ADE developed, it welcomed more electronic music styles and expanded its conference. Felix Meritis became its conference home in 1998, establishing a connection that continues today.

## How did ADE grow beyond a music conference?

ADE grew by making room for more of the people behind the music.

A turning point came in 2006, when director Richard Zijlma introduced the Live Dance Music Conference. It helped bring promoters, booking agencies, managers and other live music professionals further into ADE.

That year also brought ADE Next, a programme for emerging musicians and producers. Its beginnings were wonderfully practical: the conference venue was available on Saturday, so why not use it to help the next generation?

Even ADE’s familiar yellow-and-black cube has a history. It first appeared in 2008 and, according to the organisation’s retrospective, initially divided opinion among promoters and team members.

Today, it is difficult to imagine ADE without it.

## When is ADE 2026, and what makes this edition special?

ADE 2026 takes place from Wednesday 21 to Sunday 25 October in Amsterdam , celebrating 30 years since its foundation.

The anniversary programme brings together different generations and forms of electronic music. Officially listed highlights include Jean-Michel Jarre at AFAS Live, KI/KI’s five-hour show at Ziggo Dome, Speedy J’s STOOR Live and an opening concert featuring KYBBA with the Metropole Orkest.

That range helps explain ADE’s appeal. You can come for a favourite artist and find yourself discovering a different corner of electronic music altogether.

## Who is ADE for?

For music fans, ADE offers club nights, concerts and opportunities to discover artists.

For people building a career in music, it also provides places to learn and meet others. ADE Pro serves industry professionals, while ADE Lab includes programmes for emerging talent and people curious about electronic music culture.

You do not need to work in the industry to enjoy ADE. Equally, you can experience parts of it without spending every night on a dance floor.

## Can you visit ADE for free?

Yes. Some parts of ADE are free, although registration or other entry conditions may apply.

One example in 2026 is ADE Lab Discovery , running at Westergas from Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 October, daily from 10:00 to 18:00.

Visitors can try music equipment, join sessions and explore cultural experiences. Entry is free after registration, with a wristband collected using your registration ticket.

It is an accessible way to discover another side of ADE, especially if you are curious about how electronic music is made.

## Do you need an ADE pass to attend a party?

For most visitors choosing individual parties, a separate ticket for each event is the straightforward option. Festival tickets are sold by the respective organisers.

The ADE Pro Pass combines the conference with access to the official festival programme, but festival entry remains subject to capacity. A Pro Pass does not guarantee admission to every event.

Most festival events are 18+, while some have a minimum age of 21 or 23. Always check the specific event’s requirements before booking.

## Is there an ADE event planner?

Yes. The [ADE 2026 planner from The List Access](https://thelistaccess.nl/events/ade) helps you turn a busy programme into your own selection of parties.

You can search by artist, event or venue, browse by day and save favourites. Filters also help you find events happening now or starting within the next three hours.

Event listings include details, ticket links where available and routes to venues. All times are local to Amsterdam, and nighttime events may finish the following morning.

Use it before ADE to build your plans, or open it on your phone when you are already in the city and deciding where to go next.

## Why is ADE something the Netherlands can be proud of?

ADE gives people a reason to come to Amsterdam for music, ideas and the people behind both.

Its history includes established artists, young producers, club owners, promoters and organisers gradually making space for one another. The parties are the most visible part of that story, but the exchange of knowledge and opportunity helps explain why it has lasted.

Thirty years after its beginnings, ADE remains a Dutch creation with an international outlook.

For five days in October, you can hear what that sounds like.
