Private equity firms reportedly explored buying Microsoft’s Xbox business for $100–150 billion. Yet by late October 2026, the central question is whether Microsoft can turn its enormous gaming portfolio into a stronger business.

The distinction matters: investors discussing a purchase does not mean an owner has agreed to sell.

## Did Microsoft receive an Xbox takeover offer?

According to [The Information’s October 20 report](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/private-equity-firms-weighed-100-billion-plus-buyout-microsofts-xbox), several private equity firms considered a potential acquisition. Their discussions were exploratory, short-lived and never developed into negotiations with Microsoft. The firms were not identified.

Microsoft’s response was direct: “Xbox is not for sale.”

The reported valuation therefore represents an indication of potential buyer interest, rather than an agreed price or an announced transaction.

## Why is Xbox attracting buyout interest?

Xbox is a much larger business than its consoles suggest. Its portfolio includes Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, Minecraft, [Game Pass](https://reinouttebrake.com/stories/the-future-of-game-subscriptions-why-engagement-not-just-access-will-define-success) and a substantial [publishing operation](https://reinouttebrake.com/stories/the-industry-grows-your-chances-shrink-game-publishing-in-2025).

For a prospective buyer, the attraction would be the possibility that these assets could generate greater returns under a different operating structure. That is an investment hypothesis, however, rather than evidence that private equity would manage them better.

[Windows Central’s coverage](https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/xbox-was-reportedly-valued-up-to-usd150b-as-private-equity-firms-explored-buying-microsofts-gaming-business) highlights the scale of the proposed valuation. But a headline number does not establish which assets, liabilities or commercial arrangements a transaction would include. Those details would determine whether any purchase made financial sense.

## How is Xbox performing in October 2026?

The financial pressure helps explain the speculation.

[PocketGamer.biz reports](https://www.pocketgamer.biz/private-equity-firms-considered-150bn-xbox-buyout/) that Xbox’s revenue fell 7% to $21.8 billion in the financial year ending June 2026. The reported profitability measure fell to approximately 3%; it should not automatically be interpreted as a conventional net profit margin.

Microsoft’s [official financial metrics](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Investor/earnings/FY-2026-Q4/metrics) show that Xbox content and services revenue declined 5% across the year and 10% in the final quarter.

That category includes games, in-game content, subscriptions and cloud gaming. The challenge consequently extends beyond selling fewer consoles. These figures also do not isolate Game Pass, so they cannot establish how the subscription service performed independently.

## What is Microsoft doing to turn Xbox around?

Under CEO Asha Sharma, the company is [restructuring operations](https://reinouttebrake.com/stories/microsofts-60000-employee-exit-offer-ai-and-xbox-explained) while seeking more revenue from its strongest franchises.

PocketGamer.biz describes a planned reduction of 3,200 jobs, alongside investment in brands such as Halo and Minecraft. It also reports the creation of Xbox Labs and XP, an operation intended to expand franchises into film, television, merchandise and live experiences.

My reading is that Xbox’s next phase will be judged on execution: better games, clearer priorities and stronger returns from [the audience it already reaches](https://reinouttebrake.com/stories/transforming-large-audiences-into-active-gamers-the-power-of-game-discovery).

Cost reductions can improve short-term results. Sustained growth requires products players continue choosing.

As of October 26, 2026, Microsoft still owns Xbox and publicly rejects a sale. The buyout report reveals outside interest; the operating results explain why questions about Xbox’s future persist.
