Cyberpunk 2077 Movie: From Troubled Launch to Paramount

Cyberpunk 2077 Movie: From Troubled Launch to Paramount

Sony removed Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store in 2020. Now Paramount is developing a film set in its universe.

That reversal is more interesting than another game adaptation.

The troubled launch was never a simple commercial failure: CD Projekt reported over 13 million copies sold by December 20, 2020, accounting for refunds. Today, the game has passed 40 million, while Phantom Liberty has sold 15 million.

Paramount’s project involves Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and CD Projekt Red. There is no announced cast, story or release date. A live-action project was already announced with Anonymous Content in 2023.

So this is another development milestone, not a completed Hollywood franchise.

What makes Cyberpunk stand out is how far its world has travelled beyond that damaged launch. Edgerunners 2 arrives on Netflix on October 20, while 184 developers were working on the next game at July’s end.

My reading: these adaptations can give audiences reasons to return to Night City while the sequel is being built. The first Edgerunners already had a measurable impact on the game’s popularity, according to CD Projekt.

The film still has to earn that audience.

Would you watch Cyberpunk in cinemas?
