Pokémon is turning its trading card game into a movie.

Not another story built around a traditional Pokémon journey. This time, the Pokémon Trading Card Game itself is at the centre of the story.

The Pokémon Company has announced Pokémon: Wild Card, a new feature-length animated movie scheduled for theatrical release beginning in 2027.

The story follows an aspiring Pokémon TCG player and Mimikyu, the Disguise Pokémon, as the player battles and pursues his goal of becoming a champion.

The project brings some serious anime talent with it.

STORY inc. is handling planning and production, CloverWorks is producing the animation, Katsuhiko Kitada is directing and Akemi Hayashi is responsible for character design.

The movie was revealed during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco — an interesting place to introduce a film that turns competitive card play into narrative entertainment.

And it was only one part of a much broader Pokémon expansion.

The 2027 World Championships are heading to Singapore. Z Mega Evolutions arrive in Pokémon Champions on September 9. Pokémon TCG Pocket gets dual-type Pokémon in October. Aardman is bringing a new Pokémon stop-motion series to Disney+ in 2027. Five more LEGO Pokémon creatures have also been teased for 2027.

But Wild Card may be the most interesting move.

For decades, Pokémon has turned its stories into games, cards, toys and merchandise.

Now it is turning one of those products back into the story.

Is that the next evolution of how major entertainment franchises are built?
