Nvidia RTX 5090 Discontinuation Rumor: Is AI Taking Priority Over Gaming?

Nvidia may stop making its most powerful gaming graphics card. Not because gamers no longer want it, but because AI could make the chips more valuable elsewhere.
Two hardware leakers claim Nvidia is ending production of the GeForce RTX 5090 and reserving future GB202 chips for its professional RTX PRO lineup.
Nvidia has not confirmed this.
The numbers explain why the rumor matters.
The RTX 5090 launched at $1,999 with 32GB of memory. The professional RTX PRO 6000 offers 96GB and sells in a much higher price category. Both use chips from the same GB202 family.
If Nvidia can earn more by allocating that silicon to professional products, continuing to sell its strongest gaming card becomes a commercial decision, not just a technological one.
There’s another rumor: a 24GB RTX 5080 could become Nvidia’s new consumer flagship. That remains unconfirmed too.
The implications extend beyond one graphics card.
Gamers and professional AI customers increasingly compete for related hardware resources. Nvidia may have to decide which market receives its most advanced consumer-accessible silicon.
For gamers, that could mean fewer high-end options and higher prices.
Should Nvidia prioritize AI customers over gamers?
